The headset has some minor flaws. Putting two different volume dials next to each other probably wasn’t the best idea, and the software focuses too much on power users at the expense of everyday fans. But if you’re getting a $150 rebate and need to free your PC from the tyranny of cables, Elite Atlas Aero is also a powerful option.
Design
The Elite Atlas looks like a slightly upgraded version of the Aero Elite Atlas, which is appropriate. You still get the rugged black plastic chassis with a flexible metal headband and two large foam ear cups. This time, however, there are adjustable temples on the ear cups, not on top of them. It’s a little harder to describe, but the bottom line is that the earcup is a little easier to adjust for a good fit, and a little easier to accidentally knock it out of place.
The left ear cup is where most of the action takes place. This standard appendage is where you’ll find the microphone volume and audio volume dial (next to each other, you’re guaranteed to flip the wrong switch at least once), the power button, the micro-USB charging port, 3.5. -Micrometer audio connector and a removable microphone port.
There’s also a mic mute button outside the earpiece and an additional programmable button between the power button and thus the volume dial. In general, the sound quality was exaggerated. Turning on supernatural hearing and surround sound in Overwatch helped me know where my enemies were coming from. Going back to stereo for Final Fantasy XIV and GreedFall helped me enjoy the orchestral soundtrack and quest-related dialogue. It’s also worth noting that while the Elite Atlas Aero isn’t optimized for other consoles, it works fine with them. You can use it wirelessly with a PS4 or Switch docked, with the switch engaged, you can also use the volume dial, as I learned to my delight during a basement crawl in Link’s Awakening.
You can also use a 3.5mm audio jack to connect an Xbox One controller, unplugged Switch, or mobile phone. My only complaint here was that the included microphone on the included cable often rubbed against my shirt, leading to some nasty reactions. By extension, each option will take too long; Suffice to say, audiophiles will likely find exactly what they’re looking for, while more casual fans can simply tweak a few settings and get to work.
I wish there were more presets for fans who don’t want to spend too much time setting up their profiles. While the 3D sound settings have options for movies and music in addition to gaming, the stereo presets are beautiful: bass and treble boost, or a flat profile. It seems almost hard to ask for more options in a piece of software that’s already chock-full of them, but I’d rather have an EQ profile designed by a professional who’d rather build himself from scratch. Performance
