Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset USA 2022
The HyperX Cloud Flight S Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset ($160) is another solid entry in HyperX’s ever-expanding line of audio peripherals. The model comes equipped with Qi wireless charging, a first for gaming headsets, as well as excellent wireless performance, good sound quality, and smart headset control. Cloud Flight S also provides some disappointment. The wireless charging is not as smooth as it should be, the microphone leaves a lot to be desired, and therefore the headphones are compatible with all these systems. However, the headset is mostly a joy to wear and well worth the high price tag it accepts.
The best Cloud Flight S surround sound gaming headset is somewhat similar to the original Cloud Flight, though not as close as the name suggests. While previous models featured scratched ear cups, red highlights, and loose wires on the headband, the Cloud Flight S is a much more discreet and stylish device. It’s almost all black plastic with an associated adjustable pointed headband and a white “HX” logo on the ear cups.
The left earcup is where most of the special features reside, including a flexible, detachable microphone, power button, 7.1 surround sound button, and micro-USB charging port. But what is most interesting are the four circular signs that dot the cup-shaped directions of the left ear on the compass rose. You can program these buttons to do just about anything, however by default they control game/chat balance, even like mic mute and sidetone. These are some of my favorite parts of Cloud Flight S as they give you options due to not having many options.
On the right ear cup, there’s a volume dial, and that’s about it. It is well kept and easy to see without it.
Thanks to their plush ear cups and padded headbands, I found the Cloud Flight S Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset to be extremely comfortable to wear at the same time. Despite being stiff, it’s not my preferred way to fit any headset, I quickly found a good fit and didn’t have to worry about sizing again until I gave the device to a co-worker.
After using it myself, my co-worker agreed with my review and said the headset was easy to use and adjust. He especially likes the placement of the volume controls.
I’ve run Cloud Flight S through a variety of games on PC and PS4, including Overwatch, Empire of Empire II: Definitive Edition, Shad of the Tomb Raider, and World of Victor. In every case, the soundscape was strong and nuanced, from the impassioned pleas of Lara Croft’s friends to Ash’s shotgun blasts and the armor of a medieval blacksmith.
HyperX has also adapted surround sound for many games. Most games are developed in stereo sound, and 7.1 surround sound doesn’t do them any favors. As such, HyperX has developed algorithms for better surround sound with games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Overwatch. I didn’t feel like these options provide a much better experience than traditional stereo sound, but at least it’s a good option.
Like many other HyperX gear, Cloud Flight S runs on HyperX NGNEW software. The software is deeply tuned and combines a basic interface with many useful features. As mentioned above, you’ll be able to reprogram the button on the left earbud with a variety of media functions (pause, play, fast-forward, rewind, and forward), alter microphone volume, toggle sidetone. And some surround sound options are subject to change.
However, one disappointing thing about the software is that it has no equalization options, even though the instruction sheet states that Ngenuity allows you to “customize the equalization profile”. This would have been a great feather in Cloud Flight S’s hat, especially since it’s perfectly good for music and everyday media.
Then there’s wireless charging, which works, albeit less easily than I’d like. HyperX claims that Cloud Flight S works with any Qi charger, however in practice it was quite difficult to activate. Wireless chargers from Nimble, Google, and Mophie didn’t work at all – a charging pad from Cooler Master finally worked, only after extensive review. Naturally, HyperX’s Charge Play dock ($60) works just fine, but that’s the price of a new game. I contacted HyperX about these issues, but the company certainly didn’t know why some chargers would work and others wouldn’t.
Wireless charging didn’t take long; I got about 20% power in an hour, though the headset was much hotter later. This is a useful feature as you can charge the earphones when you’re not using them without messing up the cables. But it is a moving process. Once all this is charged, the battery can last up to 30 hours.
The microphone is also not what you would expect from such an expensive headset. It did a great job of avoiding background noise though, Mike also overpowered the turntables and gave my voice an unpleasant buzz.
I played Fogging Molly, The Rolling Stones, Old Crow Medicine Show, and G.F. I listened to the tracks. I drive with Cloud Flight S, and I was quite satisfied with the musical performance. There isn’t as much bass as there could be, which is particularly noticeable with choir and bluegrass pieces. But otherwise, the soundscape is intimate and intimate, with a clever balance between instrumentation and tone. I made the Cloud Flight S my regular workday headset during my review, and I was in no hurry to go back to my regular Logitech G533.
Our Rating | Excellent
The best HyperX Cloud Flight S surround sound gaming headset is mostly a joy to wear and well worth the hefty price tag.
- Comfortable fit
- Good sound for games and music.
- Convenient wireless features
- Easy Ear Cup Button
- Delicate wireless charging
- Incompatible microphone
The Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset Cloud Flight S is a great headset that could be even better. While the wireless charging, microphone, and software leave a lot to be desired, the design, comfort, and sound quality are exactly what you’d expect from a hyper device.
In the same price range, my absolute favorite headset is the SteelSeries Arctis 7 ($150), specifically, that headset also has a 3.5mm headphone jack. But if your main systems are PC and PS4, then the Cloud Flight S is a useful accessory, especially if you have a reliable wireless charging pad.
