With the PS5 and Xbox Series X falling off the shelves (hope you managed to score a unit), 4K gaming is likely to be more popular than ever. However, for PC gamers, the PS5 has an option to beat the adrenaline: the 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratio. For many of us, the ultrawide aspect ratio monitor provides a more immersive gaming experience. than you normally experience on a 16:9 4K panel.
And, while the 3440 x 1440 resolution on the UltraGear 34GP83A-B doesn’t exactly match 4K (3840 x 2160), it’s not too far off, and it just means you can get better gaming performance, especially on the graphics card. Low-end PC.
This extra breathing room allows you to take advantage of the 144Hz refresh rate and required graphics options and settings, without sacrificing much on pure image quality.
The LG 34GP83A-B is an ultrawide monitor with a large screen, packed with a host of gaming-specific features, and looks the same, but it comes at a price. But the design and features reflect the fact that LG has cut to justify the price.
For the most part, the design does. This is an impressive gaming monitor. As we’ve come to expect from LG, the base design of the UltraGear 34GP83A-B is eye-catching and similar to other UltraGear models. These exclusive edge sports virtually edgeless bezels, which are too thin to be sure.
This is a large monitor that will dominate even the largest of desktops, but the slimmer bezels ensure that it outperforms itself on a real display rather than a boring build. Those thin bezels also help give the 34GP83A-B a modern look, and it’s not easily distinguishable from its 38-inch sibling, the LG 38GL950G-B gaming monitor.
Around the UltraGear 34GP83A-B, you will find a series of LEDs that can be synchronized with the music or visual effects; LG calls it Sphere Lighting 2.0, but it’s similar to the feature built-in with Philips TVs. . This is a great addition, and you’ll find it more useful in the dark as more light is put on the wall behind the monitor. The light sequence can be rotated in the settings using the LG UltraGare Control Center software.
Port selection is excellent, even with the lack of USB-C and Thunderbolt ports becoming the industry standard for high-end PC monitors.
However, the available port options are excellent, including two USBs (including an upstream USB port for connecting to your PC), two HDMI, a DisplayPort, and an audio jack. All of these ports are easily accessible behind the monitor; we found the location to be very convenient compared to being at the bottom.
With a 3440 x 1440 lens, 21:9 aspect ratio, and 34-inch screen size, the LG 34GP83A-B offers liberal space for work and play, similar to the LG 34UC80-B designed for professional creatives. For everyday use in Windows 10, you can comfortably open multiple windows and apps at the same time, and there’s less stress viewing the screen’s comfort curve from its edges.
Certainly, productivity is unlikely to be the reason you invested in the 34GP83A-B: it’s a gaming monitor. In that sense, it does not disappoint at all. The ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio provides the ultimate wow factor. It makes you feel like you’re playing in the movies, and with one player spread across the field of view, you gain a lot of experience and a tactical advantage in a fast-paced game.
For gaming, the LG 34GP83A-B has a few more tricks up its sleeve to ensure it packs a punch in gaming. 1ms response time, G-Sync and AMD Friskin Premium support, and a fast 144Hz refresh rate all improve the monitor for gaming dynamos in this range.
Combined, these features have a huge impact on gaming, especially when playing hectic, fast-paced modern titles. For example, Apocalypse Eternal was played at 144Hz and turned out to be a great and enjoyable experience, especially when blasting through monsters in silky-smooth action without a hint of screen tearing. It’s impressive indeed, and going back to a 60Hz monitor won’t be easy.
The monitor’s image quality is very good and we appreciate that LG has done a great job of providing such quality in this price range. As mentioned above, this is a great monitor to use for work; But with DCI-P3 98% color gamut support, it’s also an ideal choice for photographers and video editors, for whom accurate color reproduction is paramount.
The monitor uses an IPS Nano panel and is also HDR compatible, meaning you won’t be missing out on anything that requires a decent HDR image to be reproduced.
