The Samsung Odyssey variant we’re reviewing is a 32-inch iteration of the base series (model LC32G55TQWNXZA), which adds even more curved gaming tech. It is the first monitor with a 1000R curve, which finally matches the natural curvature of the human eye. It is excellent at its finest.
It is a 32-inch panel with 1440p resolution, 1ms response time, and a 144Hz refresh rate. This is a unique gaming monitor, with premium support from AMD and a less than competitive price, with the Samsung Odyssey G5 doing nothing to show its progress… it works.
When designing the Odyssey G5 curved screen gaming monitor, Samsung focused on aesthetics for gamers by incorporating two small LED lights on the front, an illuminated Samsung logo in the center, nuts, and a ring around a mounting bracket. straight base. Colors and effects are controlled via OSD or you can turn it off completely.
The bezels around the screen are 9mm thick, not the thinnest, and the decision is AOC CQ32G1 and bezel-less design with C355W-3440UN. When you reach below the logo, you get an OSD joystick that controls all the functions of the monitor.
The style continues on the back with a host of ribbed lines that increase the curvature of the monitor. You don’t see any straight edge anywhere with the shaft ring appearing to be in motion with modern textures. Once you install the entry cover and move the cables up, the monitor takes on a super clean look.
The support is strong though, slightly staggered at the pivot point, but this is not unusual for a large panel. Settings include a height of 4.7 inches, a tilt of 15 degrees and 9/13 degrees on either side and a portrait mode. We’re not sure how anyone would use a 1000R monitor in portrait mode, but if you can think of any reason, this is one of those displays that can.
OSD Features and Calibration
Samsung built its gaming-style OSD into the 32-inch Odyssey G5. At the top, you can always see settings for the black equalizer, the response time (overdrive), refresh rate, adaptive sync (compatible with G-sync or Free Skin), and the following input interval settings. All options come with six submenus.
Out of the box, the Samsung LC32G55TQWNXZA is set to your custom picture mode, with all picture controls intact. Even with a few twists, you can’t improve on the already excellent image quality and accuracy. Probably the only thing you can change is the sharpness slider, which you may have to reduce that much to remove the slight ringing effect from the monitor. In HDR mode, you can adjust the brightness, maybe maximize it, and set the local dimming to auto for a great HDR picture.
All ports are located on the back: HDMI, DisplayPort, USB 3.0 (for service), and a 3.5mm audio jack that supports headphones or powered speakers. The gaming monitor does not have a built-in speaker.
The extreme curve of the Samsung Odyssey G5 is a major asset, not only when it comes to gaming, but also for general use. While a screen with 21:9 or 32:9 coverage will obscure a user’s peripheral vision, even more so, the height of a 32-inch monitor brings you closer, giving you a natural view of the workday’s tasks. You can place the document on the central screen, balancing the utilities from the side. You can see a full page in 60 rows in a word processor or spreadsheet.
For gaming, you’ll hardly find fault with the 32-inch Odyssey G5’s gaming performance. Both AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync support work equally well, running at 144Hz with HDR via the DisplayPort input. The Tomb Raider hits 139 fps (fps) per second with a sustained speed of around 135 fps. To that, add a super-fast dash reaction and you have smooth movements and info slack free of old weirdness. This other sibling, the Samsung Odyssey G7 at 240Hz maximum frame rates, and on both monitors, that extra height draws you into the game.
When you attach HDR, you get a rare heal. Samsung’s super-doubled display does HDR very well, with powerful targeted dimming. You may not easily see a light-level change in behavior, but you will see the additional dynamic range. Its blacks are very deep and well detailed and pop for high peak brightness. Frame rates on Call of Duty: WII dropped slightly during testing due to the additional HDR processing load. However, the speed remained around 129 fps, with peaks of 132 fps.
